To the crowd's delight, a Royal Canadian Mountie in his Red Serge threw the first 3 darts to open the 2011 National Darts Championships this morning as Edmonton, Alberta started hopping with our Day 1 national events...the Men and Ladies doubles.
What a day it turned out to be! There were the upsets and the surprises!
Ladies Doubles:
This was a real show stopper with the ladies teams that advanced to the knock-out rounds. The favourites - Team Ontario, Newfoundland and Alberta all saw just 1 ladies team from each province advance on this day while the big news was Teams British Columbia & Saskatchewan each advancing 3 ladies doubles teams. Great results for the western provinces, as we see their calibre improving greatly year after year!
In the first semi-final British Columbia's Mandy Fleck and Roxanne Van Tassel dashed the hopes for Northern Ontario's Vanessa Berry & Kim Dodd. An excellent day for the Northern Ontario girls but the powerhouse of Fleck and Van Tassel were to much as they moved into the finals.
The second semi saw Newfoundland's Patricia Farrell and Jenelle Legge take on host province's Cindy Pardy and Ivy Wieshlow. Talk about a who's who match. All of these ladies have represented Canada at some point in their careers and are a force to be reckoned with! A missed shot at a 109 finish for Farrell to tie up the match was the ticket that the Albertan's were looking for to take the match and move into the finals against friendly rivals Team British Columbia.
Finals: Alberta
VS British Columbia
The finals were a fantastic match with the ladies playing superbly and in the end Alberta marked its claim and the first title of this National Championships. Congratulations to Ivy Wieshlow and Cindy Pardy the 2011 Ladies Doubles National Champions!

Men's Doubles
On the men's side of the game Team Quebec was looking great as they advanced all 4 of their men's teams. Nova Scotia and Ontario followed with 3 teams from each province also advancing to the knock-out rounds. What a firecracker of an event this was cracking up to be with the talent that was on hand today fghting for this crown!
The first semi-final was a cooker of a match with East VS West! Dave Cameron and Rod Snow of Nova Scotia took battle against Albertan's Norm Tremblay and Keith Way. As the host provinces' last hope of getting a second gold at this point the pressure was certainly on. Fight as they might it was not to be as the East Coast boys took her home and moved into the finals.
Ontario Vs Ontario certainly guaranteed this province a place in the finals in the second semi-final match. Seasoned veterans Dave Richardson and Andre Carman stepped to the oche against fellow team mates Bruce Davey and George Haines. Both teams itching to get a chance at center stage the new kids on the block sent the vets packing and move on to meet Nova Scotia and their chance to go for gold!
Finals: Ontario
VS Nova Scotia
A nail biter of an event it would have been hard for the book makers to determine the odds on this match as both teams were fairly evenly stacked. It was the Ontarians though who held on and took home Ontario's first gold of these games. Congratulations to George Haines and Bruce Davey the 2011 Men's Doubles National Champions!
